In the 2003-04 school year the demographics were: Asian/Pacific Islander 7%, African-American 3%, Hispanic 3%, Native American 1%, multiethnic 5%, and Caucasian 81%.[1]
On March 16, 2006, a 14-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the abdomen by his friend, also 14, using a 9 mm handgun at the shooter's house. The injured 14 year old was moved to the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma, in stable condition.
At first the injury was believed to be accidental, but the shooter's parents gave information that prompted interest. Investigations revealed that the uninjured 14 year old was the leader of the plot, which included shootings and the use of explosives.[2] Multiple bomb threats had been made the previous school year.[3] Two thirteen year olds—a boy and a girl—had also been at the house earlier that day and were also involved in the plot. The shooter was expelled, and the thirteen year olds suspended. The shooter was charged with third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.
